Healthy ageing in skin/skin health

A study published in the Journal of Lipid Research in 2015 found that omega-3 supplementation improved skin hydration, elasticity, and roughness.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2008 found that omega-3 supplementation reduced the severity of acne in a group of young adults. The researchers attributed the effect to the anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3s.

Another study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology in 2013, found that omega-3 supplementation reduced skin inflammation

Hair

A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2015 investigated the effects of omega-3 supplementation on hair density and thickness in women with female pattern hair loss. The study found that after six months of supplementation, there was a significant increase in hair density and thickness in the group receiving omega-3s compared to the placebo group.

Another study published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment in 2017 investigated the effects of omega-3 on hair loss in women with telogen effluvium, a type of hair loss characterised by excessive shedding. The study found that after six months of supplementation, the supplementation group experienced a significant reduction in hair shedding compared to the placebo group.

Joints

A study published in the Journal of Rheumatology in 2010 found that omega-3 supplementation improved joint pain and stiffness in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The study also found that omega-3s reduced the need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in these patients.

Another study published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases in 2013 investigated the effects of omega-3 supplementation on joint pain and inflammation in patients with osteoarthritis. The study found that omega-3s reduced joint pain and stiffness and improved physical function in these patients.

A third study published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology in 2017 found that omega-3 supplementation reduced joint pain and improved physical function in overweight and obese adults with knee Osteoarthritis.

Perimenopause & Menopause

A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition in 2018 investigated the effects of omega-3 supplementation on menopausal symptoms in women. The study found omega-3s reduced the severity of hot flashes and night sweats in these women.

Another study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2016 investigated the effects of omega-3s on bone health in postmenopausal women. The study found that omega-3s improved bone density in these women, which is important for reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Additionally, some studies have suggested that omega-3s may have potential benefits for mood during menopause. For example, a study published in the Journal of Women's Health in 2011 found that omega-3s reduced symptoms of depression in postmenopausal women.

Hormone balance

A study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research in 2012 investigated the effects of omega-3 supplementation on PMS symptoms in women. The study found that omega-3s reduced the severity of PMS symptoms, including depression, anxiety, and bloating.

Another study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics & Gynecology in 2013 investigated the effects of omega-3s on menstrual pain and PMS symptoms in women with dysmenorrhea or painful periods. The study found that omega-3s reduced the severity of menstrual pain and PMS symptoms in these women.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2013 found that omega-3 supplementation improved insulin sensitivity and decreased markers of inflammation in overweight and obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a hormonal disorder that can cause irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, and other symptoms.

Another study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2010 investigated the effects of omega-3 supplementation on sex hormone levels in healthy men. The study found that omega-3s increased levels of testosterone and luteinising hormone, which are important for male reproductive function.

Brain

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2016 investigated the effects of omega-3 supplementation on cognitive function in healthy older adults. The study found that omega-3s improved cognitive performance, particularly in tasks related to attention and processing speed.

A study published in the Journal of Neurochemistry in 2018 investigated the effects of omega-3 supplementation on brain structure and function in healthy young adults. The study found that omega-3s increased the volume in brain areas associated with emotion regulation and reduced inflammation in the brain.

A study published in JAMA Psychiatry in 2018 found that omega-3 supplementation improved symptoms of depression in adults with major depressive disorder.
